A Message From Mary

Why do I do what I do?

Since leaving care, I’ve been trying to answer one big question:

Why might I be okay when everything around me says I shouldn’t be?

I spent my childhood surrounded by labels, stereotypes, and statistics about what it means to be a ‘kid in care.’

For years, I worked hard to prove them wrong, not to be defined or limited by my care experience. I went from feeling ashamed and embarrassed to feeling proud of my journey.

What made that pride possible?

The people I had around me, the adults who made a difference. The ones who stuck with me and saw my potential, built on the good and created space for me to be a child. The ones who saw me beyond the list of 'what was wrong with me or wrong in my life'.

Now, I bring these stories, lessons, and insights into my training, consultancy, and speaking work. Using my own personal and professional experiences, I support the adults who make the difference.

Those who support children and young people who have lived a life of adversity deserve to be connected to the impact of what they do and how they do it, to they themselves feel the potential and capacity of their practice and it's that I hope to bring home throughout all I do; it's all about connection!

Following my journey in care, I went on to study Psychology (BSc) and then Teaching (PGCE, specialising in Psychology and children and young people with additional needs)). I am also currently completing a Diploma in Therapeutic Life Story Work to become a practitioner. I am proud to blend this combination of lived and learned experience in my practice.

I am also the founder of the Guarantor Scheme, an initiative dedicated to helping care leavers access housing through guarantor support via their Local Authority in their role as Corporate Parents.

All of this is at the core of what drives our training, consultancy and speaking experiences.
